Where successful entrepreneurs begin!

Douglas College Self Employment Services is one of the largest and most successful entrepreneurial training programs in Canada. An experienced SE Team of business consultants who are entrepreneurs themselves lead participants through dynamic, hands-on training to develop the skills and knowledge needed to start and operate a successful business.

Business planning, classroom training, professional mentoring and group support ensures entrepreneurs acquire the tools needed to plan, launch and grow their business. Income support is available to students who qualify.

More than 3,500 businesses have been launched through Douglas College Self Employment Services since 1995, contributing significantly to our communities and economy.

Program Criteria

Participants must:

  • Have an active Employment Insurance (EI) claim or have had a claim in the past 36 months or have been on a maternity/parental claim in the past 60 months
  • Be legally entitled to work in Canada
  • Not already be in business
  • Be starting a business that is NEW to them
  • Be prepared to make an investment in the business
  • Provide proof of majority ownership of the business (at least 51 percent) if in a partnership

Getting started

Register to attend an Orientation Session in your area.

Phase One | Business Plan Development

Prepare a comprehensive business plan using our unique, modular planning process. Receive individual consultation and feedback on your plan.

Phase Two | Entrepreneurial Training

Attend four weeks of training and learn from industry experts how to successfully start and manage your business.

Phase Three | Ongoing Coaching and Mentoring

Work at your business while receiving support from your business consultant and staying connected to your peers.
