Overview

Build on existing skills and stand out in the audio industry with the two-semester Advanced Certificate in Applied Audio. You’ll get instruction on emerging and in-demand technologies and techniques for live audio, post-production, video game music, audio-visual storytelling, human auditory processing, mastering and immersive audio.  

This in-depth look at sound will give you direct experience with professional setups using game industry software such as Wwise and the Unreal Engine, a high-end live audio system in our 350-seat performing arts theatre, and recording studios with state-of-the-art consoles and monitoring systems, including a Dolby Atmos room (completion date TBD). You’ll experience this technology firsthand alongside a small cohort, allowing for a more personalized learning experience.

If you already have a music diploma or similar but want to upgrade your skill set, the Advanced Certificate in Applied Audio is perfect. In just two semesters, you’ll have the training you need to remain competitive in your industry. 

Job opportunities 

Once you complete the certificate, you’ll have new in-demand skills and knowledge that the industry wants from audio designers, editors and engineers. For the next 10 years, graduates from the advanced certificate can expect to see thousands of new job opportunities in B.C. Over 8,000 jobs will open in the motion pictures, sound recording, performing arts, spectator sports and related industries, while 23,000 jobs will open in the related industries of amusement, gambling and recreation (Source: British Columbia Labour Market Outlook).  

Admissions Requirements

Applicants must meet the following admissions requirements:

  • General College Admission Requirements.
  • A music-specific diploma of a least 60 undergraduate credits including MUSC 1182, MUSC 1282, MUSC 2273 or equivalents.
  • Technology Competency: The applicant will demonstrate competency in Pro Tools.
  • Listening Skills: The applicant will demonstrate competency in frequency recognition, dynamic processing identification, and stereo field positioning.
  • Graduates of Douglas College's Music Technology Diploma program will be deemed to have met these requirements.

Graduation Requirements

  • Successful completion of 30 credits
  • In good academic standing
  • 50% (15 credits) of all coursework must be completed at Douglas College.
  • Time limit to complete the program graduation requirements: four (4) years. Any courses completed outside of that time limit will not be usable. Students may seek the permission of the Department/Program to complete a credential outside the approved time limits.
