Research summary

For my doctoral dissertation, I examined the racialization of the Slavs in Canada. I continue to do work in this area with a forthcoming article in the Canadian Slavonic Papers. Titled "The Slavic Racial Type: A Sociology of Slavic Racialization", the article summarizes and updates my doctoral research which argues that the Slavs constituted a distinct racial category from the late 19th to the mid-20th century. In addition, I am currently completing work on a paper titled "Art, Community, Crime: How Settler Colonial Discourses Racialized the Slavs as Exogenous Others." The paper examines Slavic racialization in relationship to Canadian settler colonialism.

I am also completing work on a co-authored piece with my colleague Bill Angelbeck. Our paper, "Smash the Reification of the State! Anarchism and the Problem of the State", examines theoretical conceptions of the state within the anarchist social movement. Our argument is that anarchist writers and activists have reified the state as an external complex of institutional social power.

Lastly, I regularly work on my co-authored textbook, Society: The Basics. I have updated this introductory sociology textbook three times with the latest edition, the 8th, published January 2024.

My future research interest is to track social movements. My goal is to create a database of protest activity by tracking it in the mainstream and alternative press, and on social media. The aim of this research is to reveal what kinds of movements account for social movement activity, as well as to gather information on their size, duration, repertoires, and ideological frames.
