For the annual June 21 National Aboriginal Day, the Aboriginal Student Services Centre streams Aboriginal movies, the Git Hayetsk Dancers dance in the concourse and a bannock and chowder lunch is served in the Gathering Place.
The day begins with a traditional opening ceremony and smudge. Workshops and talks on Aboriginal cultures and issues are held in the Gathering Place.
Every year, the Aboriginal Student Services Centre, together with the Douglas Students’ Union and the Douglas College Women’s Centre, to hold a vigil honouring the lives of missing and murdered Aboriginal women and girls.
You know all women from birth to death
We seek your knowledge, we seek your strength
Some are stars up there with you, some are stars on Mother Earth
Grandmother, lighten our path in the dark,
Creator, keep our sisters safe from harm
