Douglas College has hosted Brazilian students from the Science without Borders (SwB) Program since 2013. In Fall 2013, we welcomed 8 students and another 20 students in Winter 2014.
Funded by the Brazilian Government, the SwB scholarship program was launched in July 2011. The program will send 101,000 Brazilian students to study internationally primarily in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics by 2015. SwB aims to foster the training of highly qualified students in the best educational institutions around the world, in order to promote the internationalization of science and technology and to increase the exchanges and mobility of undergraduate and graduate students. The program provides year-long study-abroad funding for eligible students, many of whom are pursuing their education in Canada.
CAPES, the administering government agency in Brazil, has an agreement in place with Colleges and Institutes Canada (CIC) to place students who are coming to Canada in various colleges based on their academic program. Students are from a variety of science, technology and engineering programs in Federal Institutes of Science and Technology in Brazil.
Under the program, students from across Brazil study at Douglas College for 12-18 months. Their program will include a combination of academic study and a practicum as well as English language studies, dependent on their level of English.
