Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF)


Notice to all accounting students in the Accounting Diploma ACAF stream or the Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting and Finance who plan to complete the ACAF certification.

Please note that the CPA profession will begin winding down its involvement with the ACAF program effective immediately. The last ACAF national certification exams will be offered in January 2020 and February 2021. For those affected by this change, please contact either Brandy Dudas or Shirley Mauger.

P.S. The Chartered Professional Accountants (CPA) will not grant transfer credit for BUSN 1320, Introductory Business Law, completed after December 31, 2018.

Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF)

Interested in the CPA Advanced Certificate in Accounting and Finance (ACAF)

Douglas College is an ACAF accredited institution and designated courses offered by Douglas College transfer to the ACAF program. Successful completion of the required courses, enables you to write the ACAF National Examination offered by CPA Canada.

You must be registered in an appropriate program at Douglas College to enrol in ACAF transferable courses offered by us. The most appropriate program for you depends on your educational background:

  • If you have an undergraduate degree in commerce or business, we suggest that you apply to enrol in the 30 credit hours, Post Degree Diploma in Accounting program.
  • If you have an undergraduate degree in a field other than commerce or business, we suggest that you apply to enrol in the 60 credit hours, Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting & Finance program.
  • If you do not have an undergraduate degree, we suggest that you apply to enrol in the 60 credit hours, Diploma in Accounting program.
  • If you have most, but not all the required ACAF courses, we suggest that you apply to initially enrol in the General Studies program and take only the courses you need to qualify to write the CPA ACAF common exam.

If you have completed courses at another post-secondary institution or directly through CPA, depending on the circumstances and the program that you are applying for, we will either grant transfer credit or provide an exemption for qualifying courses. Please discuss this matter directly with an academic advisor at the Registrar’s Office when you are applying to register.

Offering of ACAF courses at Douglas College:

There will normally be multiple offerings of all Entry Level and Technical Level courses in each of the three semesters, with students usually being able to choose between day and evening classes. Applied level courses will be offered starting Winter 2018 in the evenings with a minimum of one course available every semester.

All ACAF required courses are offered in the following programs:

  • Accounting Diploma Program (ACAF Stream)
  • BBA in Accounting
  • Post-Baccalaureate Degree in Accounting and Finance

1For ACAF, a minimum grade of C is required in each of the following courses: ACCT 1222, ACCT 2320, ACCT 3310, ACCT 3410, ACCT 3420, ACCT 3370, ACCT 3470, ACCT 4080, ACCT 4180, ACCT 4510, ACCT 4750, ACCT 4850, ACCT 4880, ACCT 4890 AND FINC 2340.

2Two ACAF Applied Course electives need to be completed. ACCT 3370 and ACCT 3470 meet both ACAF Technical and Applied Personal and Corporate Taxation requirements if they are both completed at Douglas College. You can choose ACCT 3370 and ACCT 3470 as one of your Applied course elective and only select one additional Applied ACAF course elective.

3Students wanting a broader exposure to business law may take BUSN 1320 and BUSN 3720 instead of BUSN 1005.
