Common Physiological Conditions in Mental Health

Course Description This online intensive, self-study course starts with a review of the nursing process and the health care of seniors.  The remainder of the course covers the nursing care of adults with the following disorders and conditions: neurological, cardiovascular, respiratory, musculoskeletal, gastro-intestinal, endocrine, urinary, cancer, sexually transmitted infections, and HIV infection.  Specific conditions addressed include: seizure disorders, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, brain injuries, CVA, hypertension, coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, congestive heart failure, C.O.P.D., TB, fractures, degenerative joint disease, rheumatoid arthritis, gastritis, peptic ulcer disease, chronic inflammatory bowel disease, hepatitis, biliary and pancreatic disorders, diabetes and thyroid disorders, cystitis, pyelonephritis, glomerulonephritis, breast and prostate cancer, specific sexually transmitted infections and AIDS.

Learning Objectives By the end of this course, students will have
  • a refreshed familiarity with common physiological conditions their clients will experience; and
  • the ability to take a holistic approach to assessment of physical concerns.

  • English 12 with a minimum grade of “C” or  Equivalent
Course Content Topics include:
  • physical assessment / health care of seniors;
  • nursing the client with
    • neurological conditions;
    • respiratory conditions;
    • cardiovascular conditions;
    • musculoskeletal conditions;
    • gastrointestinal conditions;
    • regulatory disorders;
    • urinary and reproductive concerns; and
    • infection, HIV, STI, cancer.
