Admissions Requirements
Applicants must meet the admission requirements listed below:
- General College Admission Requirements (excluding English Proficiency Requirement).
- English Studies 12 minimum final grade "B" or approved substitution*.
- One reference from a former/current instructor, employer, or volunteer coordinator who can attest to good character, temperament, willingness to learn, oral communication skills, ability to cooperate with others, and appropriateness for undertaking TESL studies.

Curriculum Framework
Graduation Requirements:
- Successful completion of 15 credits
- Minimum Grade Requirement: “C” or higher in all courses
- Must be in good academic standing.
- 50% (7.5 credits) of all coursework must be completed at Douglas College.
- Time limit to complete the program graduation requirements: 4 years. Any courses completed outside of that time limit will not be usable. Students may seek the permission of the Department/Program to complete a credential outside the approved time limits.

Learning Outcomes
Upon successful completion of the program, students will be able to:
- apply basic theories of second language acquisition, methodology, and approaches to teaching reading, writing, vocabulary, listening, speaking, and pronunciation to adult English as an additional language (EAL) learners.
- select, adapt, and/or create appropriate resources for teaching EAL to learners in different settings and at various proficiency levels.
- select and develop tasks for teaching EAL.
- respond to EAL learner writing, speaking, and pronunciation in appropriate and constructive ways.
- identify and use appropriate means of assessment to measure EAL learner progress.
- identify and communicate effectively features of English grammar and phonology.
- demonstrate an understanding of various intercultural exchanges and ways of responding to them in the language classroom.
- assess an EAL learner’s needs for tutoring support, create an individual learning plan, and support an EAL learner in improving English fluency and accuracy in specific language skills.
- identify and analyze elements of effective lessons through EAL classroom observations.
- create lesson plans to address specific learning objectives for a group of EAL learners.
- following own lesson plans, integrate new methodological and linguistic knowledge and skills, and apply principles of adult education to teaching a specific group of EAL learners.
- develop strategies for dealing with EAL teaching and tutoring challenges.
- apply reflective practice strategies for improving lessons, teaching skills, and tutoring practice.
- gain an understanding of job-seeking strategies and employment expectations in various EAL contexts.
