About

The BC Nurses Union has 5,200 vacant positions and this year will need 26,000 additional nurses.

The BC nursing crisis has put a strain on the healthcare system, leading to long wait times, compromised patient care, and overworked nurses. 1 in 5 people in Canada face mental health issues because of the extreme shortage of mental health nurses who provide specialized care. Psychiatric nurses assess patient needs, develop treatment plans and address the complex relationship between a patient’s mental, emotional and physical health in the context of their social, cultural and religious situation.

For the past 30 years, Douglas College has been the primary school for psychiatric nursing education in B.C. Close to 100 percent of our Psychiatric Nursing degree graduates currently work in the field after graduation.

Financial support is a lifeline for psychiatric nursing students

The most critical factor in attracting the very best students to Douglas College and the profession is the financial assistance available to help support their studies. The four-year program is intensive, leaving students little time to work to help pay for tuition, housing, food and other expenses.

Your impact

Douglas College’s Psychiatric Nursing program helps train the next generation of nurses, providing them with the skills and knowledge needed to make a real difference in the lives of patients.

This year, our goal is to raise $250,000 to support students in the area of Psychiatric Nursing. With a dollar-to-dollar match from Douglas College, the $500,000 total will establish 4 annual bursaries of $4,375 in perpetuity to underrepresented students pursuing a four-year Psychiatric Nursing degree.

Psychiatric nursing is vital in Canada because it plays a crucial role in addressing the mental health crisis, improving access to care, and promoting overall wellness for individuals and communities. Your donation has the power to ease the financial burden for Psychiatric Nursing Students. Support our future psychiatric nurses and give today.
