On October 26, 2023, the Douglas College Foundation in partnership with Douglas College’s Faculty of Science and Technology, Veterinary Technology (VTEC) Program, played host to the inaugural installment of the VTEC Program's Lunch and Learn Educational Series. This two-year initiative aims to advance the collaboration between leaders in the veterinary medicine sector and students in their first and second years of the VTEC program.

NVA Canada’s RVT Recruiter, Mary Pecarski, and Rebecca Millet, DVM & RVT Mentorship and Development Partner, our VetLunch Visionary Sponsor, delivered a presentation titled "How to Establish Productive Mentor/Mentee Relations."

Dr. Jennifer Wakeling, VTEC Program Coordinator & Faculty Instructor stated, “This event enabled students to better understand the career options available to them, as well as how to develop effective mentor-mentee relationships. The Veterinary Technology Department is very grateful to the sponsor NVA Canada and to the Douglas College Foundation, for their support of our program.”

Cheryl Bosley, the Director, Philanthropy of the Douglas College Foundation, commended NVA Canada's presentation, noting that it provided our VTEC students with valuable insights NVA Canada’s organizational culture, delve into the ground-breaking work they are doing with animals and engage with industry leaders. The partnership with NVA Canada and the active engagement of students were met with great enthusiasm.

As D. Hansen, and M. Currie second-year VTEC students, remarked, “This was a really great opportunity for first-years who are looking to do Co-Operative Education (co-ops) and practicums. Events like these help us with what to expect and how to help ourselves - advocating for our own learning.”  “It was a really informative event and I realized how helpful having a mentor would be for a student. This was a great opportunity to gain knowledge. Just like what the speaker said - what you don't know, you don't know.”

This feedback underscores the event's core objectives: to provide exceptional educational opportunities to our students and connect them with some of Canada’s foremost experts in the field of veterinary medicine.

Additionally, the event offers an opportunity for sponsors to present topics of industry significance and curriculum alignment, thereby fostering inspiration and engagement among both current students and potential future employees.
