MUSC 2275

Final Technology Project

The Final Technology Project comprises a supervised individual project, in which students explore the principles and techniques developed in the program thus far. This capstone project shows mastery and synthesis of the skills learned in the program, and relates to the student’s artistic and professional experience and goals. Possible projects include (but are not limited to) audio recordings, electronic music productions, film scores, or game music. Students will present their projects at the year-end MTD Portfolio Show.

Fusion Band IV

Designed primarily for students in the Music Technology Diploma program, this course provides an opportunity for musicians to rehearse and perform together using MIDI and electronic instruments under the guidance of the music faculty. Students will be placed into ensembles of varying sizes and instrumentation, and will rehearse independently as well as with instruction. All ensembles will perform in department recitals and concerts.

Contemporary Popular Theory I

This course continues the study of harmony and form, with emphasis on the diatonic, chromatic and stylistic practices of popular music from the 20th and 21st centuries.

MUSC 2314

Contemporary Instrumental Improvisation III

This course deals with the further study and application of the rhythmic and harmonic language of jazz and related contemporary music, with a focus on solo improvisation.

Through class participation, students will develop technical and aural ability through the study of the blues, modes and selected II-V-I progressions.

Students may participate on either their primary or secondary instrument. Drummers will play either a mallet instrument (vibraphone) or percussion in addition to drums.

This course is the continuation of MUSC 1214 and is designed for the intermediate level improvisor.

MUSC 2314 and 1114 are taken with both levels in the same class, working together. Those registered in MUSC 2314 will be expected to show a higher level of competency on the basic material, and will be asked to demonstrate to their MUSC 1114 counterparts. Repertoire is carefully managed by the instructor to ensure that students in both levels are exposed to as much new material as possible.

Ear Training & Sight Singing III

This course provides development of aural and sight singing skills with a focus on more complex melodic, harmonic, and rhythmic elements of tonal music, including chromaticism and irregular beat divisions.

Class Piano III

Students will develop their keyboard skills further through the introduction of more difficult technical studies and pieces. This course also includes improvisation, transposition, chord progressions, harmonization of melodies, sight reading and repertoire.

History of Western Music III: 1900 to Today

This course explores music as cultural expression in Europe and the Americas, including Canada, from 1900 to the present. Modernism and its multiple manifestations are studied in relation to selected works in representative genres and styles. Critical thinking about music and active listening to music are emphasized. Competent research and writing skills are required.

Through rehearsals and performances, students will continue to study ensemble skills such as intonation, blend and technical facility. Emphasis will be placed on developing rhythmic accuracy and sight reading skills. In addition, the proper phrasing and interpretation of various styles of concert band music will be studied.

Contemporary Instrumental Improvisation IV

This course deals with the further study and application of the rhythmic and harmonic language of jazz and related contemporary music, with a focus on solo improvisation.

Through class participation, students will develop their technical and aural ability beyond the blues, modes and basic chord/scale theory to include 32 bar song form (standards).

Students may participate on either their primary or secondary instrument. Drummers will play either a mallet instrument (vibraphone) or percussion in addition to drums.

This course is the continuation of MUSC 2314 and is designed for the intermediate level improvisor.

MUSC 2414 and 1214 are taken with both levels in the same class, working together. Those registered in MUSC 2414 will be expected to show a higher level of competency on the basic material, and will be asked to demonstrate to their MUSC 1214 counterparts. Students will develop their keyboard skills further through the introduction of technical material and pieces up to the level of RCM Grade VI or equivalent. Also included are score reading, improvisation, transposition, chord progressions using more advanced harmonic elements, harmonization of more complex melodies, sight reading and repertoire.

The rapid expansion of streaming services has created an unprecedented demand for postproduction audio services beyond traditional theatrical release films and television broadcasting. Upon completion of this course, students will be able to create commercial-quality audio for visual media using Pro Tools.

Psychoacoustics

This course explores a range of musical and acoustic systems, traces human auditory processing from the ear to the auditory cortex, and acknowledges the individual experience of sound. Psychoacoustic principles are introduced with a focus on their practical application in audio engineering, sound design and production.
Sensory, perceptual, and cognitive realms of the auditory experience are explored though studies on pitch processing, loudness, timbre, timing and spatial location, stream segregation and fusion. Lab work focuses on the practical application of psychoacoustic principles in mixing and sound design.

Audio Recording Techniques

Through lecture/demonstrations and hands-on studio work, students will learn to record and mix audio in a project studio or live environment. Emphasis will be placed on understanding the underlying concepts and theory of digital audio recording, and the development of critical listening skills. Using both hardware and Digital Audio Workstation software, students will produce several recorded tracks.

Immersive audio provides a three-dimensional sound experience. It is as significant to the music industry as stereophonic sound in the 60’s and 5.1 Surround in the 90’s. Upon completion of this course students will know how to apply modern immersive tools to create music for modern commercial release in stereo headphone and physical surround Dolby Atmos environments.

Building on MUSC 3272, this course will explore immersive audio in Virtual Reality (VR), including the Virtual Reality Musical Instrument (VRMI) tools that are facilitating modern computer music, and the audio components of the 3D game development tool, Unreal Engine.
