Douglas College butts out

Douglas College campuses will be smoke-free as of Sept. 1.

The policy change will see the removal of designated spaces for smokers on Douglas College property and the ban will include smoking and chewing tobacco, cannabis and vaping.

“We are dedicated to providing a healthy and safe environment for both employees and students, as well as the community around Douglas. This change lets us join the growing ranks of public institutions that are going smoke-free,” says
Nancy Constable, Director of Safety, Security and Risk Management.

The decision follows a campus-wide survey that found more than 75 percent of respondents were bothered by second-hand smoke to some degree. And, of the smokers who responded to the survey, 23 percent said they would like to quit. In order to support those employees and students, the College will provide information on smoking cessation programs.

The ban extends to all of Douglas’ campuses and grounds, including Training Group sites, and extends to parkades and parking lots. For more information, see the FAQ.
