Douglas College theatre arts students receive $38,000

The Raymond Burr Performing Arts Society has endowed its Award of Distinction at Douglas College with a further $38,000. The presentation of the contribution occurred after the final curtain of Douglas College’s most recent theatrical production, “The Diviners”.

“Thanks to the Raymond Burr Performing Arts Society and the Burr 100 Committee, this award will support performing arts, stagecraft and event technology students for generations to come,” said Leanne Poon, Executive Director, Douglas College Foundation and Alumni Relations.

This 2017 Raymond Burr Performing Arts Society 2nd Year Entrance Award of Distinction was also awarded during the evening. The award was presented to Douglas College theatre student Nelson Ellis, who has demonstrated outstanding achievement in his studies, course work and performance and emulates the passion, commitment and talent of Raymond Burr. He played the part of C.C. Showers in Douglas College’s production of “The Diviners”.

The contribution and award were presented by the Burr 100 Committee—Edward Eddy, Michele Sereda and Maureen Albanese—at the evening event hosted by the Douglas College Foundation & Alumni Association and sponsored by Canadian Western Savings.

This annual award was established by the Raymond Burr Performing Arts Society in honour of New Westminster born actor Raymond Burr, who was known for his role in TV series such as Ironside and Perry Mason.

The Diviners, presented by the departments of Theatre and Stagecraft & Event Technology, is written by Jim Leonard, Jr. Performances ran Nov. 10-18 at Douglas College’s New Westminster Campus.

Douglas College is the largest degree-granting college in B.C., combining the academic foundations of a university and the employer-ready skills of a college to provide the most relevant and inspiring undergraduate experience in British Columbia.
