Douglas College’s Coquitlam Campus is growing in more ways than one.
The College’s Institute of Urban Ecology (IUE) is inviting the public to the grand opening of the Sustainability, Outreach and Learning (Sol) Garden at the Coquitlam Campus June 20.
The Sol Garden Party – which coincides with Summer Solstice – will feature a tour of the garden, hands-on activities for children, live music, salsa dancing demonstrations and light refreshments.
“All of us at the Institute of Urban Ecology are very excited to officially open this facility. We see it as a hub for community education, outreach and engagement regarding sustainable urban gardening,” said Executive Director of IUE, Robert McGregor. “We are looking forward to offering educational workshops for the public at the Sol Garden this summer and fall.”
Construction of the Sol Garden was completed last August. The celebratory event marks the first full season of operation. McGregor said he hopes those who attend the garden party will learn more about programs, like the User Network for Insect Biology in the Urban Garden (UNIBUG), and take away sustainable approaches to urban gardening.
“We also hope that people attending truly enjoy themselves and the activities we have planned as the event is intended to be a celebration of the garden and of the summer solstice,” he said.
The free event will take place 4-6pm at the south side of the Coquitlam Campus. Registration is available online.
