Duties and Responsibilities
The Standing Committee on Educational Policies is mandated under the College and Institute Act, R.S.B.C. 1996, c. 25 and under Education Council Bylaws, Rules and Procedures- -Douglas College.
As directed by Education Council (by special request or in accordance with the Educational Policies Review Cycle) the Committee will review current educational policies and recommend revisions, and will develop new policies as requested. In so doing, the Committee will look for evidence of clarity; consistency with other policies and with the College Statement of Mission, Values and Goals; currency and relevance; comprehensiveness; integrity; and educational merit.
All recommendations, revisions, and drafted new policies will be submitted to Education Council for approval.
Thus the Committee may number from six to twelve members but at no time may the number of faculty members fall below at least half of the total membership. At least one of the members from faculty, staff or administration must also be a member of Education Council and serve as liaison between the committee and the council.
(See Education Council Bylaws, Rules and Procedures - Douglas College, Standing Committee, 5.1.2: "The Council shall annually, following elections, establish membership on the standing committees." See also, Education Council Bylaws, 4. Roles and functions of Members, 4.3.1 : "Each member of the Council is expected to serve on at least one standing committee of Council.")
A meeting of the Committee may proceed when at least one-half of the membership is in attendance.
A chairperson will be elected annually, by the members of the Committee.
The Committee will report regularly to Education Council, and will present an annual report of its activities to Council at the regular May meeting of Education Council (see Education Council Bylaws, 8. Standing Committees, 8.1.4.)
