Admission requirements

Before you apply to Douglas College, you need to make sure you meet the necessary admission requirements.

Admission requirements for academic programs

  • You have completed B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent in another school system or are at least 19 years old

and ONE of the following:

  • TOEFL - minimum score 83 IBT (Douglas College only accepts an official TOEFL score. Douglas College's institutional code is 9568.)
  • IELTS - minimum overall band test score of 6.5 (Academic Module only)
  • International Baccalaureate (IB) English Language A (higher level) - minimum grade of 3 or C
  • AP English Language or Literature - minimum grade 3
  • B.C. high school Communications 12 - minimum grade of B
  • B.C. high school English 12 - minimum grade of C
  • CAEL - minimum overall and essay score of 60
  • Cambridge English CAE- minimum score 75 or "B"
  • Cambridge English CPE - minimum score 60 or "C"
  • Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) Level 8 in each of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing
  • EIKEN Practical English - minimum placement of Grade 1
  • GED Language Arts Writing & Reading - minimum score 450
  • IB English Language A (SL) - minimum grade 3
  • LPI - minimum essay score of 4
  • Successful completion of one of the following: EASL 0360, ELLA 0360, EASL 0460, ELLA 0460
  • Pearson Test of English (PTE) Academic - minimum score of 56
  • Proof of undergraduate (bachelor's) degree from a post-secondary institution where English is the language of instruction

Admission requirements for academic ELLA Program

  • You have completed B.C. secondary school graduation or equivalent in another school system or are at least 19 years old

and ONE of the following:

  • TOEFL - minimum score 45 IBT (Douglas College only accepts an official TOEFL score. Douglas College's institutional code is 9568.)
  • IELTS - score of 4.0 in Speaking and Listening and 4.0 in Reading and Writing
  • Douglas College English Language Learning and Acquisition Assessment (offered to students living in the Vancouver area. For details, contact Douglas International.)
  • An official post-secondary transcript showing successful completion of English for Academic Purposes courses as outlined in the Articulation Handbook for ESL Programs in the British Columbia College and Institute System (transcript must show four skill areas: Reading, Writing, Listening and Conversation)
