Skills Connect for Immigrants

Are you a newcomer looking for work in your field?

The Douglas College Skills Connect program has led over 2,700 Lower Mainland and Fraser Valley newcomers to employment fitting their pre-landing skills, experience and education. We work with internationally-trained professionals from a variety of occupations as well as people in regulated health fields seeking to work in a Canadian health care setting.

The Skills Connect for Immigrants Program is fully funded through the Government of Canada.

Skills Connect for Immigrants participants receive:

  • Information about their trade or profession in Canada
  • A career plan
  • A professional resume and "Canadian-style" job search skills
  • Introductions to employers and professionals in their field
  • Job interviews
  • Language and credential assessments
  • Individual assistance and ongoing support
  • Funding for short-term courses to improve qualifications and English language skills

Skills Connect for Immigrants applicants are:

  • Immigrants with certification in their field OR
  • 5 years’ experience in a profession/trade or high skill occupation from outside of Canada OR
  • Employed immigrants lacking high school, Essential Skills or recognized certification
  • Individuals who are unemployed (and non-EI) or employed in a job outside their field
  • Individuals with an English proficiency at a high intermediate to advanced level
  • Immigrants who are motivated to find work in their field
  • Permanent Residents (5 years or less) living in the Lower Mainland/Fraser Valley area of British Columbia
