Code	Course Description
THEA 1110	Acting for the Stage: Level 1 This course is an exploration of the actor’s internal and external resources for the creation of character. Students participate in scenes and dramatic exercises with emphasis on awareness, prepared improvisation, speech, and movement.
THEA 1111	Speech for the Stage This course is a practical workshop in voice technique including relaxation, breathing, resonance, articulation, speech sounds, vocal power and emotional impulse. The course is designed to equip beginning actors with techniques for use of the voice on stage.
THEA 1130	Theatre History I This is a survey course that explores the roots of the Western theatre tradition. Students will learn about innovations in theatre styles and staging conventions from the Greek, Roman, Medieval, and Renaissance periods. By attending live theatre and considering the way historical methods are adapted in contemporary productions, students will develop skills as informed audience members and competent critics. Students will also participate in group discussions of representative plays.
THEA 1171	Creative Movement for the Stage This course is a practical workshop in movement for the actor. It initiates the exploration and development of the body as an instrument for theatrical creativity and interpretation.
THEA 1180	Play Production I This is a practical course in theatre production. There will be active involvement in the Theatre Department productions as a production assistant and/or actor. Emphasis is on becoming familiar with the requirements and duties related to the myriad jobs involved in professional theatre production.
THEA 1210	Acting for the Stage: Level II This course continues to explore the actor’s internal and external resources for the creation of character. Students participate in scenes and dramatic exercises with emphasis on script analysis and acting styles appropriate to specific plays, playwrights and genres.
THEA 1211	Advanced Speech for the Stage This course is a practical workshop in advanced speech in which the student practices the basic techniques learned in THEA 1111. Emphasis will be placed on the reading and interpretation of prose, drama, and poetry.
THEA 1230	Theatre History II This is a survey course that explores Western theatre from the 17th Century to the 20th Century. Students will learn about the innovations in theatre styles and staging conventions that have occurred since the Renaissance. By attending live theatre productions, students will strengthen their critical skills and gain an appreciation for the way historical methods are adapted in contemporary productions. Students will also participate in group discussions of representative plays.
THEA 1271	Advanced Problems in Stage Movement This course is a practical workshop in movement for the actor. It continues the exploration and development of the body as an instrument for theatrical creativity and interpretation. A greater understanding of character physicalization in relation to acting is emphasized. Work in dance techniques and stylized movement is also included.
THEA 1280	Play Production II This is a practical course in theatre production. There will be active involvement in the Theatre Department productions as a production assistant and/or actor. Emphasis is on becoming familiar with the requirements and duties related to the myriad jobs involved in professional theatre production.
THEA 2310	Acting for the Stage: Level III This course continues to explore the actor’s internal and external resources for the creation of character. Students participate in scenes and dramatic exercises with emphasis on script analysis, historical research, and acting styles appropriate to specific plays, playwrights, and genres.
THEA 2311	Voice & Movement on Stage This course is a practical workshop in the use of body/voice as an instrument for theatrical creativity and interpretation. It is designed to reinforce the vocal and physical tools already acquired by the student actor and to guide the integration of these techniques into the reactive dramatic situation in order to find the organic reality of a character.
THEA 2380	Play Production III This is a practical course in theatre production. There will be active involvement in the Theatre Department productions as a production assistant and/or actor. Emphasis is on becoming familiar with the requirements and duties related to the myriad jobs involved in professional theatre production.
THEA 2410	Acting for Film This course introduces students to the vocabulary and techniques unique to acting for the camera (film and video). Instruction will focus on applying and adapting stage acting techniques to film, identifying and practicing vocal, physical, and emotional exercises to create a film acting technique, and making students familiar with current industry standards and terminology with regard to the actor’s craft in film and television.
THEA 2411	Voice & Movement on Stage II This course is a practical workshop. It continues the development of the body/voice as an instrument for theatrical creativity and interpretation. It is designed to further reinforce the vocal and physical tools already acquired by the student actor; to guide the integration of these techniques into the creative dramatic situation (in either theatre, film, or television); and to find the organic reality of a character.
THEA 2480	Play Production IV This is a practical course in theatre production. There will be active involvement in the Theatre Department productions as a production assistant and/or actor. Emphasis is on becoming familiar with the requirements and duties related to the myriad jobs involved in professional theatre production.
THEA 3180	Advanced Performance and Production I This is a practical , advanced, independent study course in theatrical performance and production. Students will be involved in the Theatre Department productions in one of the following roles: Dramaturge, Assistant to the Director, Choreographer, Musical Director, Voice/Movement Coach, Actor, Theatre Manager, or other appropriate position as identified by the student in consultation with the Theatre Department. Guided studies projects are supervised and evaluated by a faculty member. Before registering, students must submit an application for approval of their guided studies project to the Coordinator of the Theatre Department.
